As a production editor, ghostwriter, writing coach, and the owner of LifeWrite Publications & Media, Garrett Drew Ellis knows how to share a story. Garrett is presenting during our Lightning Round: Flash Sessions about how to become a ghostwriter and earn a living by bringing unforgettable stories out of others.
Garrett is a Lancaster native, and talked to us about how much he’s looking forward to HippoCamp 2016.
Hippocampus: We don’t want to give too much away about your session/panel/workshop, but please share with us a golden nugget that you hope attendees will take away from your talk that isn’t found on the program description.
Garett: During my talk, I hope that attendees walk away believing that they do not have to be the stereotypical “starving artist” in order to pursue their writing. Ghostwriting is a way of both feeding the need to write, as well as the need to pay the bills.
Tell us who would benefit most from your session and why.
This is who will benefit the most from my workshop: the writer who wants to wake up, write and then go to sleep just to awake the next day and do it all again. All while making a living.
What is your best advice for those attending a writing conference, whether it’s for newbies or veterans?
Be open. Drop what you know and be open to what the presenters have to offer. Being teachable first leads to one day doing the teaching.
Aside from speaking, what you are most looking forward to about being part of the HippoCamp?
Mary Karr! I couldn’t put Lit down when I first read it! I am so excited to simply be in the presence of such an awesome wordsmith.
What’s on your personal conference agenda?
I am really excited for 2 sessions in particular: Writing Personal Narrative with Andrew Reiner and Multiplication and Division with Lisa Romeo. Both are topics that I need to strengthen and develop further within my own writing practice and life.
What are you most excited to share with attendees and other speakers about Central PA?
I live in Lancaster but I am really excited to connect with writers from outside of our area. I can’t wait to share all of Lancaster’s new restaurants with the attendees! I love to eat and I love to share!
