Jesse Waters is a writer, educator and creative venue director. If he’s not sharing his own work in print or inspiring college students to do the same, then he’s bringing artists, scientists, makers, and doers to Bowers Writers House at Elizabethtown College (a two-time sponsor). Jesse, a highly rated 2015 speaker, returns to HippoCamp this year, this time serving on a Truth in Creative Nonfiction panel. He shared with us some thoughts about this year’s conference.
Hippocampus: We don’t want to give too much away about your panel, but please share with us a golden nugget that you hope attendees will take away from your talk that isn’t found on the program description.
Jesse: Werner Herzog tells us that the “ecstatic truth” is the only one that matters… but what makes that true, and what makes certain truths ecstatic, or mystical? I have no idea, but I can certain BS about it a lot.
What is your best advice for those attending a writing conference, whether it’s for newbies or veterans?
Eat the food. Make the nice. Go to bed late, wake up early.
Aside from speaking, what you are most looking forward to about being part of the HippoCamp?
Since you’re a returning speaker, please share some thoughts on why you’re excited to return for another year.
This conference is run by writers themselves, and that’s an important factor. The divisor between attendee and admin. is razor thin, and that closeness makes for real dynamism.
What’s on your personal conference agenda? Perhaps share with us a session/event you don’t want to miss.
Lisa Jakub rocks. Don’t miss her events. And Sarah Einstein? Not too shabby either.
You’re a local: What from the central PA region are you most excited to share with attendees and other speakers?
Anything, really… it’s a great town with cool people and some fine food… make sure you get to Himalayan!
Jesse, we love your sense of humor and look forward to learning from you this year. And we totally agree with you about those snacks.
