Speaker and Session Preview: Jules Barrueco and Getting Personal Among the News: Another Outlet for Creative Nonfiction

jules-barruecoHippocampus Magazine reviewer (and past contributor) Jules Barrueco is part of our flash sessions line-up. She’ll present “Getting Personal Among the News: Another Outlet for Creative Nonfiction,” in which she shares tips on how to break in to traditional media markets with your personal stories. We asked her a few questions about HippoCamp.

HippoCamp: What is your best advice for those attending a writing conference, whether it’s for newbies or veterans?

Jules: Don’t hold back! Ask questions. Read at open mic night. Talk to the speakers. Meet everyone you can meet and learn everything you can learn. The HippoCamp staff will give you all the tools you need to create an amazing experience, but it’s up to you what you build with them.

Aside from speaking, what you are most looking forward to about being part of the HippoCamp?

HippoCamp provides a great opportunity to surround yourself with like-minded people and find your tribe. I met some of my most treasured writing friends at a lit fest in Denver last year, and I look forward to meeting more people who share my passion. Most of us are not in the presence of hundreds of writers on a regular basis. In fact I spend most of my time surrounded by lawyers. As much as I love my legal brethren, who besides a writer understands how amazing it feels to receive a really great rejection letter??

You’re a returning attendee and a HippoCamp first-time speaker; please share some thoughts on why you’re excited to return for another year.

The inaugural HippoCamp brought together a warm and enthusiastic group of people with a palpable love of writing and respect for the community. I can’t wait to see who comes back, and who joins the HippoCamp family, in year number two.

What’s on your personal conference agenda? Perhaps share with us a session/event you don’t want to miss.

I look forward to Saturday night.  Mary Karr’s keynote speech followed by open mic night will likely be the high point of my weekend – perhaps the high point of my summer!

Thanks, Jules! One of our high points will no doubt be seeing so many familiar faces this year, including you!
